Frequently Asked Questions

A game of 20 questions?

It’s impossible to list questions that cover all of the subjects you will likely want to discuss with your wedding photographer.  So I’ve listed 20 of the more frequently asked ones below.

By all means take a look, but my best advice is to just reach out.  I’ll happily answer any question you can think of.

Every wedding is a unique event and there will be all sorts of things we will want to discuss to ensure I truly understand the approach required to produce the results you are looking for.

That is why I always offer to meet my couples as often as they like.  And also to meet face to face if that is suitable.  This also enables me to develop the rapport with you that ensures we are on the same wavelength during your day.

So, whilst the information I gather will always be unique to you, there are some details that I will always establish. This is quite a long list, but in summary, it includes:
– Names and relationships of all of your key guests
– The timeline for the day, which will inevitably evolve as your plans mature
– What approach you want to take to group photography
– Venue details
– The style and specific details you may want me to prioritise as I capture your day
– And many other things!

Yes.  Obviously within reason if it happens to be at the other end of the country!

In general it is an advantage to have visited a venue prior to a wedding.  This enables me to understand details like where the sun will be setting for those dreamy golden hour photographs and what my contingency plan will be if we have a rainy day.

So, if I haven’t worked as a venue previously I will endeavor to visit it, introduce myself to the staff and learn the layout.  This will also help greatly during our meetings when we discuss what your plans are and what you want me to achieve for you.

Of course. I’m your photographer, you set the rules not me!

Please take a look at My Approach page where I talk more about my views on group photography.

Absolutely.

If it’s important to you, it’s important to me!

Two simple packages.  A half day package and a full day package.

Details of both are on my Pricing page.

Five hours for a half day, as long as necessary on a full day.

None, they are included in my pricing.

Yes and Yes.

A signed contract is important because it makes it very clear what you require me to deliver and how you can be certain I have delivered it.  It also makes it clear what we have agreed and what I need from you in order to achieve everything that you want from me.

Any professional photographer should provide a contract to guarantee everyone is clear on exactly what has been agreed.

Yes, every booking is offered with a free pre-wedding shoot.

Further details are available in my Pricing page.

Please take a look in My Approach page where I have included some detail on this.

If I had to give it a number I would say typically over 250 for a half day and over 500 for a full day.  But what really counts is that I deliver a set of pictures that captures all of the details we discussed during our pre-wedding meetings and which fully tells the story of your day.

Quality over quantity

I definitely subscribe this rule.  During a full day I will likely shoot over 2,000 images. This guarantees I capture all of the key moments without any blurry images of people with unflattering expressions on their faces.  Any photographer who tells you that every image they take is a keeper is pulling your leg!

Every image I take is inspected, only the best ones make it through my selection and editing workflow to be delivered in the final portfolio of pictures. I also don’t simply “flip” all of the pictures to make a set of black and white duplicates.  Black and white pictures are treated to their own specialised editing approach.

Don’t worry you are not alone!  Most people (myself included) don’t like a massive camara being pointed at them and being told to smile.

It’s why I place so much importance on taking a fun, relaxed approach and also why I take the time to get to know you before your wedding day.  My preparation also plays a part, because it’s what enables me to put you at ease, help out, and become part of the day.

Basically, we have fun, we share the excitement and the photographs flow from that.

I always turn up with two identical Nikon, full frame camaras.  I also have multiple flashes, lenses, memory cards and batteries.  This eliminates any chance of equipment failure impacting our plans for the day.

Yes, I love back and white pictures.

A black and white picture can communicate emotions and a story in a uniquely powerful way.  But not by simply removing the colour and clicking save.

This is why I specifically select the images that most suit a black and white conversion and undertake a completely separate editing process using specialist monochrome editing software to produce the final result.

A lot of photographers (me included) will honestly say the same thing, “This has never happened to me”.  This is because we are all self-employed, and we are each responsible for our businesses reputation.  As a wedding photographer, if you wake up feeling rough you just get on with it and the adrenalin soon kicks in.

But of course we must all have a backup plan. That’s why myself, and I assume most/all other wedding photographers, are part of wider communities of creative professionals that enables us to issue and respond to requests for short notice assistance, should this be necessary.

In the event that a second photographer was necessary, I would fully brief the photographer and all photographs taken would still be individually assessed, selected and edited by myself prior to me delivering them to you within the expected timeframe.

During the peak wedding season delivery times are typically 2 to 4 weeks to ensure all photographs are selected and edited to the standards you expect.

I ask for a £250 booking fee to secure a date

Yes.  Far from this being an issue I really enjoy being around other creative professionals during a wedding day.  Often I can bounce ideas off a videographer and work with them in a way that complements both of our outputs.

To find out if anyone made it this far down the FAQ list 🙂

No.  It’s always nice to be fed, but I never insist on it.  All I ask is that you let me know beforehand if I need to bring my packed lunch.
